About
Suhasa B. Kodandaramaiah is a pioneering biomedical engineer and neuroscientist whose work sits at the intersection of robotics, automation, and neuroscience instrumentation. His research has fundamentally advanced the field of in vivo electrophysiology by developing sophisticated robotic systems capable of performing highly delicate neural recording procedures with minimal human intervention. His most celebrated contributions include the autopatcher series — automated robots capable of performing intracellular patch-clamp recordings in living animals — which have collectively garnered over 250 citations and transformed a notoriously difficult, low-throughput technique into a scalable, reproducible methodology. His multi-robot systems further enabled simultaneous intracellular recordings across multiple neurons, opening new windows into circuit-level neural computation. Beyond electrophysiology, Kodandaramaiah developed Craniobot, a computer-controlled robot for cranial microsurgeries, and the Autoinjector for single-cell microinjection in brain tissue, demonstrating a broad vision for automating the full neuroscience experimental pipeline. His more recent work extending machine-vision-guided microinjection to multicellular organisms underscores his commitment to democratizing precision biological techniques. Through his inventions, Kodandaramaiah has meaningfully lowered barriers to sophisticated neuroscience experimentation, empowering researchers worldwide.
