Stuart J. Cordwell is a pioneering figure in proteomics, whose work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of the minimal gene set required for life. His research centers on microbial proteomics, with a particular focus on the Mollicutes—a class of bacteria lacking cell walls. Cordwell’s landmark 1995 study, cited nearly 950 times, produced the first comprehensive protein map of *Mycoplasma genitalium*, the smallest known self-replicating organism. By using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and amino acid composition analysis, he identified 50 gene products, revealing a high proportion of acidic proteins and providing a foundational blueprint for systems biology. He further advanced the field with his 1997 methodological overview, cited over 200 times, which critically examined the complementarity and limitations of proteomics versus genomics, particularly for organisms lacking extensive DNA sequence data.
