About

Shelli L. Casler-Failing is a leading voice in the integration of robotics into mathematics education, with her work centering on how LEGO robotics can transform the teaching and learning of proportional reasoning. Her most impactful study, a mixed-methods action research case study published in 2018 (21 citations), demonstrated that incorporating LEGO robotics into a seventh-grade mathematics curriculum significantly promotes the development of proportional reasoning through a Social Constructivist lens. Building on this, her 2021 multiple case study (20 citations) explored how robotics instruction in a middle grades mathematics methods course enhances pre-service teachers’ Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), revealing critical insights into developing the “T” in TPACK. Her 2022 work further examines how pre-service teachers can productively struggle with mathematical uncertainties when learning with robots, a key recommendation from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. With additional publications on action research and growth problems, Casler-Failing’s research is foundational for educators seeking to merge hands-on robotics with rigorous mathematical thinking, directly impacting both classroom practice and teacher preparation.
