Shanlin Chen is a pioneering surgeon-researcher at the forefront of robotic hand surgery, a field where precision is paramount and the margin for error is measured in millimeters. His work has fundamentally reshaped the treatment of complex wrist injuries, particularly scaphoid fractures—notoriously difficult to heal due to their tenuous blood supply. Chen’s landmark 2019 study on robot-assisted percutaneous scaphoid fixation (41 citations) was among the first to demonstrate the clinical viability of this technique, reporting on ten patients with acute fractures. He has since expanded this work, showing in a 2024 two-centre study (5 citations) that the procedure achieves a 97% first-pass guidewire placement success rate and consistent radiographic union.
