About

Dr. Ruifeng Luo is pioneering the intersection of microalgae biotechnology and gastrointestinal therapeutics, with a primary focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) management. His most-cited work introduces an innovative "stress-trained microalgae robot" platform, which combines probiotics with an antioxidant backpack and an intestinal brake mechanism. This system addresses two critical challenges in oral drug delivery: protecting active agents from the harsh gastric environment and achieving precise, targeted release in the inflamed gut. By engineering microalgae to respond to elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and microbial imbalances characteristic of IBD, Luo’s approach offers a living, self-propelling therapeutic vehicle that can actively navigate and treat intestinal inflammation. His research, already garnering significant attention with 3 citations in its first year, represents a paradigm shift from passive drug carriers to active, biohybrid microrobots. This work not only advances IBD treatment but also establishes a versatile platform for delivering probiotics, antioxidants, and other biologics to the gastrointestinal tract, positioning Luo as a rising leader in bioinspired micro-robotics and precision medicine.
