About
Roger Ward is a leading figure in space robotics and autonomous systems, with a career dedicated to expanding the frontiers of planetary exploration. His primary research areas encompass experimental astrobiology, cooperative robotic swarms, and on-board mission planning for deep space. Ward’s most significant contribution is his foundational work on the European Space Agency’s ExoMars rover, detailed in his highly cited 2006 paper (39 citations), where he helped define the Pasteur payload and the mission’s astrobiology-driven approach. He has also pioneered the use of planetary Aerobots (aerial robots) for Mars exploration, developing image-based localisation technology, and has explored the potential of cooperative underwater swarms. His 2018 white paper for the EPSRC UK-RAS Network, “Space Robotics & Autonomous Systems,” synthesises his vision for widening the horizon of space exploration. Ward’s work addresses the critical challenge of operating robots in unstructured, hazardous environments with limited communication, advancing the autonomous capabilities that will underpin future missions to Mars and beyond.
