About

Robert Given is a urologic surgeon and clinical researcher whose work has significantly advanced the understanding of surgical outcomes and quality of life in prostate cancer treatment. His research primarily focuses on minimally invasive and robotic-assisted urological surgery, with particular emphasis on radical prostatectomy and patient-reported outcomes following localized prostate cancer treatment. Given's most influential contribution, a 2010 study comparing quality of life outcomes across open prostatectomy, robotic prostatectomy, cryoablation, and brachytherapy, has garnered over 100 citations and remains a foundational reference for clinicians counseling patients on treatment options. His earlier 2006 longitudinal study, cited over 50 times, helped establish the value of validated quality-of-life instruments in prospectively evaluating surgical approaches from a single institution. Beyond outcomes research, Given has contributed technical innovations to robotic surgery, including refinements to vesicourethral anastomosis techniques and demonstrating that posterior reconstruction prior to anastomosis leads to earlier return of urinary continence. His work on nerve-sparing status and urinary function recovery has further guided surgical decision-making. More recently, he expanded his robotic surgical portfolio to include ureteral reimplantation. Collectively, his research has helped shape evidence-based, patient-centered approaches to urological surgery.
