Richard P. Binzel is a pioneering planetary scientist whose work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of asteroids and the early solar system. His research focuses on the physical characterization of near-Earth objects (NEOs), asteroid taxonomy, and the origin of meteorites. Binzel is best known for developing the "Bus-DeMeo" asteroid classification system, a widely used spectral taxonomy that links asteroid compositions to meteorite types, providing critical insights into planetary formation.
