About
Dr. Quanhua Liu is a leading figure in satellite remote sensing and atmospheric data assimilation, with a career dedicated to improving how we observe and predict aerosol events. His key research areas include the development and application of variational data assimilation methods for aerosol optical properties, particularly for dust storms and air quality monitoring. Dr. Liu’s most impactful contribution is his pioneering work on the three-dimensional variational (3D-Var) assimilation of MODIS aerosol optical depth (AOD) data. In his landmark 2011 study, cited over 288 times, he successfully integrated observations from both Terra and Aqua satellites into the NCEP Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation system, dramatically enhancing the ability to model and forecast a major dust storm over East Asia.
