About

Piet A. van Rijn is a leading virologist whose research focuses on the molecular detection and pathogenesis of emerging livestock viruses, particularly Bluetongue virus (BTV). His most impactful contribution is the development of a sustained, high-throughput real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) diagnostic assay, which was rapidly deployed during the 2006–2009 European epidemic of BTV serotype 8. This innovative assay, based on genome segment 10, streamlined the diagnostic process by combining robotized viral RNA isolation from blood samples with an all-in-one method that includes initial denaturation of the double-stranded RNA genome.
