Peter C. Burger is a towering figure in neuropathology, whose work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of brain tumors and infectious diseases of the central nervous system. His research focuses on the surgical pathology of gliomas and the diagnosis of viral encephalopathies. Burger’s major contributions include pioneering the use of in situ hybridization for the accurate diagnosis of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a devastating JC virus infection.
