About

Pascal Leroux is a French educational technology researcher whose work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence in education (AIED), computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL), and educational robotics. Since the early 1990s, he has pioneered the development of cooperative learning environments in which machines act as genuine pedagogical partners — both for teachers and student groups — rather than passive tools. His most influential contribution, "Project-Based Learning as a Basis for a CSCL Environment" (2001, 33 citations), established a compelling framework for using educational robotics as the foundation for collaborative, project-driven learning. This work grew from his doctoral research, which produced **RoboTeach**, an intelligent tutoring system designed to assist both instructors and learners in technology literacy through programmable micro-robots — a remarkably forward-thinking concept for the mid-1990s. His subsequent habilitation thesis (2002) synthesized this trajectory, examining human-computer partnerships across both classroom and online training contexts. Leroux also extended his research into vocational and continuing education, exploring how micro-robot-based environments could serve SME workforce training. Across roughly three decades of scholarship, his work has consistently challenged researchers and practitioners to rethink the role of computing systems as active, adaptive collaborators in the learning process.
