About
Neil Corrigan is a leading surgical oncologist whose work has fundamentally shaped the modern approach to rectal cancer surgery. His primary research focuses on the comparative effectiveness of robotic-assisted versus conventional laparoscopic surgery, and on strategies to prevent life-threatening complications like anastomotic leaks. Corrigan is best known as the principal investigator of the landmark ROLARR trial, the first worldwide randomized controlled trial comparing robotic and laparoscopic resection for rectal cancer. The trial’s primary outcome paper, published in *JAMA* in 2017, has amassed over 1,340 citations, providing crucial evidence on the risk of conversion to open laparotomy. Recognizing the inherent learning curve in surgical innovation, Corrigan also pioneered methods to adjust for these effects in trial analyses, ensuring more accurate comparisons. Most recently, he led the IntAct trial (2025), a randomized study investigating the use of indocyanine green fluorescence angiography to reduce anastomotic leaks—a persistent challenge in colorectal surgery. Through these rigorous, high-impact studies, Corrigan has provided the surgical community with essential data to guide clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes.
