About

Laura Polito is a leading figure in glycoscience, with a research focus centered on the chemical biology of heparin and the development of advanced tools for studying carbohydrate–protein interactions. Her most impactful contribution is the pioneering design and application of microarrays containing synthetic heparin oligosaccharides, a breakthrough that enables the rapid, high-throughput analysis of heparin–protein binding events. This work, detailed in her highly cited 2006 paper (194 citations), directly addressed the longstanding challenge of heparin’s structural complexity and heterogeneity, providing a powerful platform to dissect its diverse biological roles beyond anticoagulation. By creating defined, synthetic oligosaccharide libraries, Polito’s research has significantly advanced the understanding of how specific heparin sequences regulate processes such as inflammation, cell growth, and viral entry. Her methodological innovations have not only clarified fundamental structure-activity relationships but also laid the groundwork for designing safer, more selective heparin-based therapeutics. Through this elegant fusion of synthetic chemistry and bioanalytical technology, Polito has established herself as a key architect in the modern study of glycosaminoglycan function.
