About

Juhyeon Sim is a leading researcher in atmospheric aerosol science, with a primary focus on black carbon (BC) and its climatic impacts. Her work centers on developing and refining retrieval methodologies to quantify black carbon absorption aerosol optical depth (AAODBC) using AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) observations. In her highly cited 2022 study, she pioneered a technique to retrieve AAODBC from global AERONET data spanning nearly two decades (2000–2018), enabling a comprehensive assessment of BC’s contribution to light absorption worldwide. This work, with 9 citations, established a foundational dataset for understanding BC’s radiative effects. Building on this, her 2023 paper introduced an AERONET-based methodology to retrieve BC light absorption and validated it against MERRA-2 reanalysis data, achieving 5 citations and demonstrating the robustness of her approach. Sim’s contributions are critical for improving climate models and satellite retrievals, as they provide ground-truth constraints on BC’s absorbing properties. Her research directly addresses one of the largest uncertainties in climate forcing—the role of light-absorbing aerosols—making her work essential for students and researchers studying aerosol-climate interactions, atmospheric chemistry, and remote sensing.
