About

John Vines is a leading researcher at the intersection of human-computer interaction, digital health, and developmental psychology. His work focuses on designing and evaluating technology to support well-being across the lifespan, with particular emphasis on children’s play and social connectedness in vulnerable populations. In his highly cited 2021 systematic review on physical–digital play technology, Vines synthesized evidence linking interactive play to developmentally relevant child behaviours, establishing a foundational framework for designing technologies that promote cognitive and social growth. His 2022 scoping review on digital interventions for social isolation among individuals with mental health conditions is equally impactful, critically mapping how technology can address both subjective loneliness and objective isolation—a pressing issue exacerbated by the pandemic. With over 32 citations for his play technology review and 18 for his isolation work, Vines’ contributions are shaping evidence-based design guidelines. His research is notable for bridging rigorous methodological review with practical application, informing interventions that are both developmentally appropriate and psychologically supportive. Vines’ work continues to influence how we design inclusive, health-promoting digital environments for children and adults alike.
