About
Jan Vijg is a pioneering figure in the biology of aging and genome instability. His research has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of how somatic mutations accumulate over a lifetime, driving the aging process and age-related diseases. A landmark contribution is his development of single-cell whole-genome sequencing methods, which allowed, for the first time, the direct measurement of mutation rates in individual human cells. This work revealed that mutations accrue far more rapidly than previously thought, providing a mechanistic basis for cellular decline.
