About
James O. Peabody is a prominent urologic surgeon and researcher whose career has been defined by pioneering contributions to robotic and minimally invasive urological surgery, particularly in the treatment of prostate and bladder cancers. Working closely with Mani Menon and colleagues at the Vattikuti Urology Institute, Peabody played a central role in establishing and refining robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, helping to develop the now widely adopted Vattikuti Institute Prostatectomy technique using the da Vinci surgical system. His early foundational work on structuring robotic prostatectomy programs and detailing surgical technique has accumulated hundreds of citations, with his top papers collectively representing over 3,700 citations — a testament to their lasting influence on urological practice worldwide. Beyond prostatectomy, Peabody extended his expertise to robot-assisted radical cystectomy, contributing landmark analyses of perioperative outcomes, learning curves, and urinary diversion strategies through the International Robotic Cystectomy Consortium. He has also advanced patient care through rigorous randomized controlled trial methodology, notably examining continence recovery following periprostatic tissue reconstruction. His body of work has fundamentally shaped how robotic surgery is taught, performed, and evaluated across the globe.
