About
J. Afonso is a leading figure in astronomical instrumentation, whose work is central to the next generation of ground-based observational astronomy. His primary research focus is the design, development, and construction of MOONS (Multi Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph) for the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Afonso’s major contribution lies in engineering this revolutionary instrument, which uniquely combines the VLT’s immense 8-meter collecting power with the high multiplexing capability of 1,000 optical fibres, each deployed by individual robotic positioners. This allows astronomers to observe a thousand celestial targets simultaneously across optical and near-infrared wavelengths. His most cited work, “Rising MOONS” (2018, 17 citations), documents the instrument’s progression past its final-design review, marking a critical milestone in its construction. Afonso has also detailed the complex subsystems he helped bring to life, including the field corrector and rotating front end. Through his instrumental leadership, Afonso is enabling transformative surveys of the Milky Way, distant galaxies, and the early universe, cementing his legacy as a key architect of the VLT’s future capabilities.
