Heather Stuart has fundamentally advanced our understanding of cellular invasion, with her work centering on the biophysics and molecular machinery of tumor cell migration. Her most cited study, "Tumor Cell Pseudopodial Protrusions" (2005, 76 citations), introduced an elegant and highly influential method for isolating pseudopodial domains from invasive Moloney sarcoma virus (MSV)-transformed MDCK cells. By using 1-μm pore polycarbonate filters that selectively allow passage of these protrusions while retaining the cell body, Stuart enabled the first direct biochemical analysis of the pseudopodial compartment. This purification technique revealed that the fraction is enriched with specific phosphoproteins, providing critical early evidence that localized signaling within these protrusions drives the invasive phenotype.
