About

George Baciu is a versatile computer scientist whose research spans interactive computer graphics, robotics simulation, and cognitive computing. He is perhaps best known for developing RECODE, an innovative image-based collision detection algorithm introduced in 1999 that challenged the field's reliance on traditional geometric object-space methods. By leveraging image-space approaches, RECODE offered a fresh solution to detecting object interactions in virtual reality, 3D motion simulation, and robotics — a contribution that has garnered over 120 citations across multiple publications and remains a touchstone in the collision detection literature. Beyond graphics, Baciu has made meaningful contributions to robotics, developing graph-theoretic models and computational schemes for simulating robot manipulators, including work on human motion estimation from monocular image sequences. His research into virtual-hand interfaces further bridges human-computer interaction and robot assembly programming. In more recent years, Baciu has expanded his focus toward cognitive informatics and cognitive computing, contributing to theoretical frameworks for abstract intelligence and autonomous AI systems. His sustained engagement with IEEE's ICCI*CC community reflects his commitment to shaping emerging interdisciplinary conversations at the intersection of brain science, machine intelligence, and cognitive systems — making him a genuinely wide-ranging and intellectually curious contributor to modern computing research.
