About
Erik Rud is a leading researcher in urologic oncology, with a primary focus on improving the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer through advanced imaging. His key research areas include the integration of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) into prostate cancer management, particularly MRI–transrectal ultrasound fusion biopsies and preoperative surgical planning. Rud’s seminal 2014 study, with 225 citations, demonstrated that MRI–ultrasound fusion biopsies accurately characterize the index tumor, correlating closely with step-sectioned radical prostatectomy specimens—a critical advance for targeted treatment. He also led a randomized clinical trial evaluating whether preoperative MRI reduces positive surgical margins during radical prostatectomy, and a 12-year follow-up of that trial assessed long-term oncological outcomes, finding no significant survival difference. Additionally, Rud is investigating focal ablation as a less invasive alternative to radical prostatectomy for intermediate-risk prostate cancer, with an interim analysis of a randomized controlled trial. His work has shaped evidence-based guidelines for MRI use in prostate cancer, influencing both surgical precision and patient selection for focal therapy.
