About
Toru Matsugasumi is a leading urologic surgeon and researcher whose work has significantly advanced the precision of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. His primary research areas include image-guided surgery, focal therapy, and the integration of advanced imaging with robotic-assisted procedures. Matsugasumi’s most impactful contribution is his landmark 2014 study on Magnetic Resonance Imaging–Transrectal Ultrasound (MRI-TRUS) image-fusion biopsies. With 225 citations, this work demonstrated that fusion biopsies accurately characterize the index tumor, correlating findings with step-sectioned radical prostatectomy specimens in 135 patients—a critical step toward personalized, targeted cancer management. He further pioneered surgical navigation by developing a three-dimensional (3D) model displayed on the da Vinci® console’s TilePro function, enhancing nerve-sparing during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy. His innovative spirit extends to experimental focal therapy, as shown in his 2016 study on robotic transmural ablation of bladder tumors using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).
