About

Eliot J. Martin is a leading head and neck surgeon whose research has fundamentally advanced the treatment of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), particularly through the refinement of transoral robotic surgery (TORS). His work centers on optimizing surgical margins, managing the human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive patient population, and improving oncologic outcomes while minimizing complications. In his landmark 2018 study (121 citations), Martin demonstrated that TORS achieves excellent oncologic control with negative margins in a large cohort of 314 patients, establishing the procedure as a safe, effective alternative to traditional open surgery. His earlier 2011 investigation (94 citations) critically addressed the risk of pharyngocutaneous fistula in concurrent neck dissection and TORS, providing evidence-based protocols that reduced this serious complication. Martin also contributed vital guidance on managing recurrent and metastatic HPV-positive OPSCC after TORS (32 citations), a growing clinical challenge. His cumulative work has shaped modern surgical practice, offering patients less invasive treatment with preserved function and survival. A sought-after speaker and collaborator, Martin continues to drive innovation in robotic head and neck oncology.
