About

E. K. Grebel is a leading astrophysicist whose research focuses on the structure, formation, and evolution of galaxies, particularly through the study of stellar populations, tidal streams, and large-scale spectroscopic surveys. A major contribution is the discovery of a giant stellar tidal stream around the interacting galaxy NGC 4631, reported in a 2015 paper that has garnered 55 citations. This work, based on deep imaging with a small robotic telescope, revealed a bridge-like feature connecting NGC 4631 and NGC 4656, providing key insights into galactic interactions and halo assembly. Grebel is also a key figure in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-V (SDSS-V), the first all-sky, multi-epoch, optical-to-infrared spectroscopic survey, which is pioneering panoptic spectroscopy and mapping the Milky Way and beyond with unprecedented detail. With a career marked by leadership in major surveys and a deep commitment to understanding galaxy evolution, Grebel’s research has shaped modern observational cosmology. Her work continues to inspire students and researchers exploring the dynamic processes that govern galaxies across cosmic time.
