David Cibula is a leading figure in gynecological oncology, whose research has fundamentally reshaped surgical approaches to cervical cancer. His primary focus lies in evaluating the oncologic safety of minimally invasive techniques, challenging established paradigms to improve patient outcomes. Cibula’s most impactful contribution is the International Radical Trachelectomy Assessment Study (IRTA), which critically compared open versus minimally invasive radical trachelectomy for early-stage cervical cancer. This work, published in 2021 with 61 citations, provides essential data on surgical safety and fertility-sparing options. His leadership in the IRTA study (53 citations) established a global benchmark for evaluating these complex procedures. More recently, Cibula has pioneered the ENGOT-cx23/MITO/LASH trial, a single-arm study investigating minimally invasive simple hysterectomy for low-risk cervical cancer, directly addressing a critical gap in the literature. Beyond his clinical trials, he is dedicated to surgical education, evidenced by his work on robotic training for European gynecological oncology trainees, and to global quality improvement through the GO SOAR collaborative.
