About
Chongyang Liu is a leading figure in the combinatorial discovery of advanced photocatalytic materials. Their research centers on the high-throughput synthesis and rapid screening of novel semiconductor alloys for solar energy conversion. Liu’s most notable contribution is the development of a groundbreaking methodology that combines robotic piezoelectric dispensing with scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). In their seminal 2010 work, Liu pioneered the rapid synthesis of quaternary Zn<i>x</i>Cd1−<i>x</i>S<i>y</i>Se1−<i>y</i> photocatalyst arrays directly onto conductive glass. This approach, which utilized hydrazine to stabilize the selenium precursor, allowed for the systematic exploration of a vast compositional space. By enabling the parallel fabrication and characterization of hundreds of unique material compositions on a single chip, Liu’s work dramatically accelerated the identification of optimal photocatalysts. This innovative strategy has garnered significant attention (32 citations) and established a powerful new paradigm for materials discovery, moving beyond traditional one-at-a-time synthesis to efficient, data-rich experimentation.
