About

Carlos Alexandre Pontes Pizzino is a robotics researcher whose work bridges autonomous navigation, multi-robot coordination, and bio-inspired artificial intelligence. His primary research areas include simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), multi-drone systems, and human-robot collaboration in unstructured environments. Pizzino’s most impactful contribution is the proof-of-concept for a multi-drone system designed for forestry applications, which integrates open-source SLAM frameworks and LiDAR to enable efficient autonomous forest mapping—a project developed under the OPENSWARM EU initiative that has already garnered 13 citations. He is also the lead author of NeoSLAM, a novel long-term SLAM approach that draws on computational models of the brain to maintain accurate localization over extended periods, addressing a critical limitation in vision-based SLAM. Additionally, his work on establishing on-site construction pilots for human–heavy-duty robot collaboration demonstrates his commitment to real-world deployment. With a growing citation record and contributions to both fundamental SLAM research and applied multi-robot systems, Pizzino is establishing himself as a forward-thinking roboticist focused on making autonomous systems more resilient, scalable, and practical for challenging outdoor and industrial settings.
