About
Abie H. Mendelsohn is a head and neck surgeon whose career has been defined by pioneering work in transoral robotic surgery (TORS), particularly its application to laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers. His research has fundamentally expanded the boundaries of minimally invasive surgical oncology, demonstrating that complex procedures — including supraglottic and total laryngectomy — can be performed transorally with favorable patient outcomes and accelerated rehabilitation. Mendelsohn's most influential contribution, a 2012 prospective study on TORS supraglottic laryngectomy (115 citations), established critical clinical benchmarks at a time when the field was still defining the procedure's feasibility. His parallel work on transoral total laryngectomy (82 citations) pushed those boundaries further, challenging longstanding assumptions about what robotic surgery could achieve for advanced laryngeal disease. He has continued refining these techniques through cadaveric studies, single-port system adaptations, and multi-institutional outcome analyses. Beyond operative innovation, Mendelsohn has contributed to surgical education, publishing research on robotic skills acquisition and long-term retention among otolaryngology residents. His international survey work on TORS adoption reflects a broader commitment to understanding — and shaping — how the field embraces emerging technologies. Collectively, his publications represent a cohesive, forward-looking body of work that has helped define modern robotic head and neck surgery.
