Abstract

Machine Learning (ML), a subset of Artificial Intelligence, is one of the most powerful technologies today that has a significant impact on healthcare. This chapter introduces ML and Deep Learning and their applications in the healthcare domain that help provide affordable, faster, and more accurate care. It gives a brief outline about the ongoing research on applications of ML in healthcare, including radiology, oncology, diabetic retinopathy, cardiac diseases, personalised prediction and treatment, drug discovery, clinical research, robotic surgical tools, medical imaging and clinical decision support system. A few systems based on ML approved by the US Food and Drug Administration have been described briefly. The chapter concludes with the challenges that need to be overcome.
