Abstract
Few of the principles of robotics are less than 30 years old: the position control systems which mobilise the joints are echoes of the gunnery aimers of the Second World War, while for many tasks the commands specify repetitive actions in the style of the earliest numerically controlled machine tools. What then has brought the robot into such recent prominence? The answer must lie in the availability of cheap computing power
