Abstract

As a special motor, permanent magnet arc motor (PMAM) has a good application prospect in large telescopes and robot joints. In this article, a partitioned-stator hybrid excited PMAM (PS-HE-PMAM) is proposed and investigated, which exhibits improved torque performances and good flux adjustment capability. The motor configuration and working principle of the investigated PS-HE-PMAM are first addressed. Then, the main structural parameters of the proposed motor are investigated and optimized for maximizing the torque and minimizing the torque ripple. Based on the optimal design, the electromagnetic performances of the four PS-HE-PMAMs with four different slot-pole combinations are fully investigated. Meanwhile, the PS-HE-PMAM is also compared with single-stator hybrid excited PMAM (SS-HE-PMAM) by using finite element (FE) method. Finally, the prototype of the proposed PS-HE-PMAM is built and experimentally tested to verify the effectiveness of the FE results.
