Abstract

Sewage systems play a major role in today's modern world for the transportation of sludge from source to appropriate destinations. In addition to this advantage, this systems brings with it a lot of problems as well. Such as, sludge accumulation, damaging marine wildlife, polluting the environment, Clogs and scale formation, settling of waste materials like tree branches, and plastic containers, and sewer overflow hampering the road infrastructure in the cities, ultimately causing trouble to the citizens etc. Sludge accumulation generally takes place in the sewage network. Where it becomes very important to clean the accumulation in order to ensure the proper working of these systems. At present, cleaning sewage pipelines is a tedious job in India where cheap manual labor is utilized for cleaning purposes. This practice is very harmful to humans and can even cost them their lives due to the poisonous gases present in the sewage network which are present in very high concentrations. Although multiple automated cleaning devices have been developed by scientists but either they are very costly for implementation in every part of the country or require a technically sound professional to operate them, which is not very easily available in rural parts of India. Also, these cleaning systems can only clean sludge at the manhole location and not in between two manholes, therefore, they're unreliable in conventional Indian drainage systems. The major goal of this project is to design and develop a low-cost sewage monitoring robot, which has not yet been developed in the market. This robot will initially monitor the sewage level, identify blockages, and ultimately avoid large-scale sewage issues. In addition, the cleaning system would also be installed in the robot itself, which would lower the construction cost of two separate devices. The cleaning system would be capable of removing sludge not only at the manhole location but also between two manholes, which is absent in the present cleaning systems. This way, multiple problems can be solved at once- Monitoring of sewage network in initial phases to avoid large-scale issues, an inbuilt cleaning mechanism in the monitoring robot capable of cleaning the sludge between two manholes, saving workers from being exposed to hazardous chemicals and gases by eradicating the need of manual intervention for cleaning sludge purposes in the sewage network.
