Abstract

Abstract The paper provides information about the advantages of using of liquid hydrogen (LH 2 ) compared with compressed gaseous hydrogen gas. The necessity of specially designed tank systems to fit the restricted available space within the vehicles is highlighted. The hermetic clean break coupling for the filling/refilling of cryogenic fuel systems, which enables safe and easy handling, extremely short filling and coupling times as well as a high rate of filling sequences, is presented. The indispensable basic element of the world's first public LH 2 filling station in Munich airport — the robot application of this coupling — is illustrated.
