Abstract

This chapter presents a current, comprehensive perspective on research in the field of computer assisted language learning (CALL). The author provides a foundation of diverse academic ancestry and traditions. Ongoing developments and trends in the field are explored, including open educational resources (OERs), mobility and digital worlds and the rewilding of learning. Controversies in the field are also explored. Finally, emerging research and practices are examined, including issues related to the power of data collection and concerns of privacy, artificial intelligence (AI), robots and various forms of automation. The author concludes with a focus on the need to prepare future teachers to employ the results of this research most effectively.
