How the shaft of a golf club influences performance

This chapter explains how a shaft can influence the golf ball's trajectory and the golfer's ability to repeat that trajectory with a low amount of variability when that shot is required. It is organized by shaft properties; how these properties are quantified and typical ranges for these properties are mentioned. The chapter discusses the influence of these properties on clubhead delivery and the ball's trajectory. The shaft is a highly influential club component with numerous properties that can play key roles in fitting a club to a particular golfer in an effort to make a systematic change in golf ball trajectory. The chapter suggests that shaft parameters can be adjusted to improve the consistency aspect of performance. Robotic testing reveals relatively clear relationships between each shaft property and clubhead delivery. When the neurobiological nuances of a human golfer are called upon to supply the kinetics to the grip of the club, those clear relationships become considerably stirred.
