The QT interval is a measurement on an electrocardiogram (ECG) that represents the total duration of ventricular depolarization and repolarization — essentially the time it takes for the heart's lower chambers to electrically reset after each beat. It is measured from the beginning of the Q wave to the end of the T wave, and is typically corrected for heart rate (QTc). In robotics and AI-assisted medicine, QT interval monitoring is particularly relevant in robot-assisted surgical procedures such as laparoscopic prostatectomy and gastrectomy, where factors like pneumoperitoneum, patient positioning, and anesthetic agents can alter sympathetic nervous system activity and prolong the QT interval, increasing arrhythmia risk. Robotic surgical systems are also being used to perform cardiac sympathetic denervation in patients with Long QT Syndrome, a potentially lethal condition linked to ion channel mutations. Accurate QT interval tracking matters because prolonged QT intervals can trigger life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias, making real-time monitoring and AI-driven ECG analysis essential tools for perioperative patient safety and cardiac risk management.
