Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is a medical treatment in which a patient breathes pure oxygen (100% O₂) within a pressurized chamber operating at greater than normal atmospheric pressure. This elevated pressure allows significantly higher concentrations of oxygen to dissolve directly into the bloodstream and tissues, promoting accelerated healing, reduced inflammation, and enhanced cellular repair. In the medical and rehabilitative context, HBO therapy has been investigated for a range of applications, including wound healing, neurological recovery, and preservation of physiological function following surgical intervention. Research has explored its use in penile rehabilitation after procedures such as robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, where oxygen-rich tissue environments may support nerve recovery and vascular function. While not a core robotics or AI technology, HBO is relevant to the field insofar as robotic surgical systems increasingly require complementary post-operative rehabilitation protocols. Understanding adjunctive therapies like HBO helps engineers and clinicians design more comprehensive, outcome-focused robotic surgery workflows and evaluate the full spectrum of patient recovery beyond the operating room.
