A Document Type Definition (DTD) is a formal specification that defines the structure, elements, and attributes permitted within a document format, most commonly used with XML and HTML files. It establishes rules governing how data should be organized, what tags are valid, and how those tags relate to one another, essentially serving as a schema or blueprint for document validation. In robotics and AI, DTDs and related schema technologies play an important role in standardizing data exchange between systems. They underpin formats used to represent robot mission descriptions, model exchange standards like those derived from Modelica for differential-algebraic equation systems, and ontology-based knowledge representations for flexible manufacturing applications. By enforcing consistent structure, DTDs enable heterogeneous robotic systems and software tools to reliably parse and interpret shared data. DTDs matter because interoperability is critical in multi-robot systems, simulation environments, and intelligent automation pipelines. When robots, planners, and simulators share well-defined document formats, integration becomes more predictable, debugging is simplified, and systems can be more readily extended or reconfigured — qualities essential for agile, standards-compliant robotic deployments.
