Z Mackiewicz is a prominent researcher in vascular pathology and autoimmune connective tissue diseases, with a particular focus on systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) and inflammatory myopathies. Her landmark 2003 study, cited 67 times, demonstrated that while vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors are upregulated in systemic sclerosis skin, this expression is imbalanced and fails to promote effective angiogenesis—a finding that fundamentally reshaped understanding of vascular damage in the disease.
