About
Antti Sukura is a leading researcher in connective tissue disease pathology, with a focus on the vascular and muscular complications of systemic sclerosis (SSc) and inflammatory myopathies. His work has fundamentally advanced the understanding of how impaired angiogenesis and vascular damage drive disease progression. In his seminal 2003 study, Sukura demonstrated that in SSc skin, the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors is paradoxically increased yet imbalanced, failing to promote effective angiogenesis—a finding that has garnered 67 citations and reshaped the field’s view of vascular pathology.
