Yuki Murakami’s research sits at the intersection of human-robot interaction and bio-inspired robotics, exploring how robots can better connect with people and move with greater stability. In a seminal 2008 study, “Minimum movement matters,” Murakami demonstrated that even minimal robot motion during video chat significantly enhances the operator’s sense of social telepresence—a finding that has shaped the design of telepresence robots and earned 45 citations. More recently, Murakami has turned to the challenge of dynamic locomotion, investigating how biological principles can improve robotic agility. In a 2023 study, “Enhancing postural stability in a musculoskeletal hopping robot through stretch reflex application on biarticular thigh muscles,” they showed that mimicking human stretch reflexes in biarticular muscles dramatically improves balance during rapid hopping. This work, while early in its citation impact, represents a promising step toward more resilient, animal-like robots.
