About
Yujing Cao is a pioneering figure in the field of remote robotics and networked autonomous systems. Her foundational work, most notably the 1998 paper "A Remote Robotics Laboratory on the Internet" (7 citations), laid early groundwork for what would become a transformative approach to robotics research. In this seminal study, Cao detailed the development of a remote robotics research site featuring ten small mobile robots, each hosting onboard Unix workstations, that enabled repeatable, remote experimentation over the Internet. This system allowed researchers to control robots for sensing, navigation, and obstacle manipulation from anywhere in the world, effectively democratizing access to physical robotics laboratories. As one of the earliest implementations of Internet-based robotic experimentation, Cao's work anticipated the rise of cloud robotics and teleoperation systems that are now central to modern research and education. Her contributions helped establish the technical and conceptual foundations for remote laboratories, influencing subsequent developments in distributed robotics, telerobotics, and online experimentation platforms.
