About
Woung Youn Chung is a pioneering figure in robotic endocrine surgery, whose work has fundamentally shaped the field of minimally invasive thyroid procedures. His primary research focuses on the development and refinement of robotic-assisted thyroidectomy, particularly through the transaxillary approach, and the optimization of perioperative pain management. Chung’s landmark prospective, randomized trial on bilateral superficial cervical plexus block (BSCPB) established a new standard for postoperative analgesia in robot-assisted endoscopic thyroidectomy, demonstrating that regional nerve blocks significantly reduce acute pain and improve recovery outcomes. Beyond individual techniques, Chung has provided crucial macro-level insights into the adoption of robotic surgery across Asia. His comprehensive 10-year trend analysis of robotic-assisted surgery for thyroid, colorectal, stomach, and hepatopancreaticobiliary cancers in Korea (2005–2014) has become a foundational reference for understanding the diffusion and future trajectory of robotic technology in general surgery.
