About
Wilhelm Boland is a pioneering chemical ecologist whose work has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of how plants perceive and respond to their environment. His research centers on plant–insect interactions, chemical signaling, and the molecular mechanisms of induced plant defenses. Boland is perhaps best known for developing the MecWorm, a robotic device that mechanically mimics herbivore feeding with unprecedented precision. His landmark study on *Phaseolus lunatus* (Lima bean) demonstrated that MecWorm-induced responses—including early signaling cascades and volatile organic compound emissions—closely mirror those triggered by actual herbivory, a breakthrough that has garnered over 157 citations. This work provided a powerful, reproducible tool for disentangling the effects of wounding from those of insect oral secretions. Beyond this, Boland has made seminal contributions to elucidating the biosynthesis of plant volatiles and the role of jasmonates in defense signaling.
