Dr. Whon-Ho Choi is a pioneering colorectal surgeon whose work has significantly advanced the field of minimally invasive oncologic surgery. His primary research focuses on the application of robotic-assisted techniques for the treatment of colon and rectal cancers, with a particular emphasis on improving surgical precision and patient outcomes. Dr. Choi’s major contributions include standardizing complex procedures such as robotic right colectomy with complete lymphadenectomy and intracorporeal anastomosis, as well as refining robotic-assisted transabdominal intersphincteric resection for ultra-low rectal cancers. His seminal 2012 paper on robotic right colectomy, which has garnered 31 citations, established a reproducible technique that enhances dexterity and visualization compared to traditional laparoscopy. This was followed by his 2013 study on intersphincteric resection, cited 20 times, which demonstrated the technical feasibility of preserving anal function in very low-lying tumors. Through these works, Dr. Choi has helped define the modern robotic approach to colorectal cancer, offering patients the potential for less invasive surgery with better functional preservation.
