About

Dr. Tiia Ngandu is a leading epidemiologist and public health researcher whose work centers on the prevention of cognitive decline and dementia through multimodal lifestyle interventions. She is best known for her pivotal role in the landmark Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER), the first large-scale, randomized controlled trial to demonstrate that a combined program of nutritional guidance, exercise, cognitive training, and vascular risk management can protect cognitive function in at-risk older adults. Building on this foundational work, Dr. Ngandu is now spearheading the LETHE randomized controlled feasibility trial, which adapts the FINGER model into a digitally supported, personalized lifestyle program to promote brain health. Her research has garnered significant international attention, with the FINGER trial accumulating over 2,000 citations and inspiring a global network of similar studies. Dr. Ngandu’s contributions have been recognized with major awards, including the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant, and her work continues to shape public health strategies for healthy aging and dementia prevention worldwide.
