Thomas J. Savides is a pioneering gastroenterologist and advanced endoscopist whose work has significantly shaped the fields of interventional endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). His research focuses on developing minimally invasive techniques for gastrointestinal disorders, particularly in the management of achalasia and pancreatic cancer. Savides is best known for his contributions to EUS-guided fiducial placement, a critical technique for targeting tumors during stereotactic body radiotherapy. His 2009 paper on a backloaded bone wax seal method for metal fiducial placement (28 citations) remains a standard reference for precision in pancreatic cancer treatment. He also led the first U.S. human experience with transesophageal endoscopic myotomy (TEEM) for achalasia (2013, 15 citations), demonstrating the feasibility of a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery.
