About
Dr. Ta-Chih Hsiao is a leading figure in aerosol science and remote sensing, whose work is critical to understanding the complex interactions between air pollution, biomass burning, and climate. His research focuses on the characterization of atmospheric aerosols, particularly through the integration of in-situ measurements and satellite-based observations. A major contribution is his pioneering field study in northwestern Thailand during the 7-SEAS/BASELInE campaign, where he led a comprehensive deployment of instrumentation to characterize smoke aerosols from biomass burning in Myanmar. This work, which has garnered 19 citations, validated satellite data from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and provided essential ground-truth for regional air quality models. Dr. Hsiao has also advanced the methodology for retrieving the optical properties of complex aerosols, developing a novel approach to determine the effective mixing weight of soot aggregates within dust plumes. This technique, published in 2016, significantly improves the accuracy of satellite remote sensing for polluted dust, a notoriously difficult class of aerosol to study. Through these achievements, Dr. Hsiao is shaping our ability to monitor and predict the environmental and climatic impacts of aerosol pollution across Asia.
