Dr. Sung-Sik Han is a pioneering hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of minimally invasive liver surgery. His primary research focuses on laparoscopic major liver resections, particularly in the context of hepatocellular carcinoma and living donor hepatectomy. Dr. Han’s landmark contribution is the first large-scale multicenter study on laparoscopic major liver resection in Korea, which compiled data from 1,009 cases across 12 tertiary centers. This highly cited work (69 citations) established the safety, feasibility, and oncologic efficacy of the laparoscopic approach, helping to shift global practice toward minimally invasive techniques. Beyond this, he has been instrumental in refining surgical techniques for living donor liver transplantation, including pure laparoscopic donor right hepatectomy, and has published extensively on outcomes and complications. His research has been recognized with numerous awards from the Korean Association of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery, and he serves as a key opinion leader in the Asia-Pacific region.
